Industry Landscape
Boston's 22 hospitals and 34 colleges and universities are important anchors in the city's economy. With over 124,000 employees, 144,000 students, and 240,000 annual in-patients, their economic impact on the city's gross regional product is $15.6 billion annually. Boston's "eds and meds" are a steady engine of economic growth and a vital part of Boston's innovation and creative sectors.

Boston has received the most in the National Health Institutes award funding for 14 straight years and area institutions grant more life science PhDs annually than any other metropolitan area. A strong academic and institutional sector, with 34 universities and colleges and 22 hospitals, combined with a strong business sector makes Boston one of the world's leading hubs of scientific innovation and capitalization.

Boston bustles with the creativity and kinetic energy of a skilled, diverse population with a third of its residents between the ages 20 and 35. Boston's business community is robust, with large numbers of lawyers, real estate developers and brokers, venture capitalists, and finance institutions specializing in working with life sciences organizations. Boston's workforce is well educated and diverse, with strengths in all of the scientific, manufacturing, and business support areas that life sciences companies depend on.


Program Details
LifeTech Boston is an initiative dedicated to fostering the growth of Boston's life sciences sector. It works to expand existing life sciences companies in Boston as well as recruit national and international businesses to join the six main cluster areas in the City. This strategic approach is designed to attract, retain, support, and strengthen Boston companies engaged in biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, medical devices, and other related industries.

Site Selection - In addition to helping you identify possible locations for your business in one of Boston's 17 neighborhoods , the Boston Redevelopment Authority offers a range of very competitive real estate. For detailed information, please contact us.

Financing Assistance - The BRA offers very competitive financing to businesses large and small for a wide range of needs.

Workforce Training Visit our Supporting Organizations & Programs page - Through our Jobs and Community Services program, the BRA offers focused training opportunities for tomorrow's workforce. Recently, the city took the lead in dedicating a quarter of a million dollars to developing green workforce capacity.

Business Advocacy - Our experts assist current and prospective Boston life science businesses navigate the City of Boston to facilitate access to technical assistance and funding.
