Spearheaded by the Office of Mayor Thomas
Menino and with non-profit, corporate, and
community partners, the Coalition has provided low and
moderate income taxpayers with free financial services since
2001. From January to April, we provide
free tax preparation at twenty-eight volunteer-staffed
locations around Boston. The Coalition also now offers a
year-round financial coaching program that directly involves
volunteers in promoting economic empowerment in Boston
communities.
Are
you interested in volunteering?
Tax season is right around
the corner and we need your help! To join in the effort to
alleviate poverty our EITC volunteers can fill a variety of
different roles:
- Tax Preparer: Help
Boston residents file their taxes! After receiving training
and becoming IRS/VITA certified, volunteer tax prepares do
basic returns at 25 sites throughout Boston.
- Credit Advisor: Help
taxpayers understand their credit report and score in a
short, one on one session while they are waiting to have
their taxes prepared. Credit advising will take place at 9
sites.
- Student Aid Mentor:
Prepare students for college or vocational school by guiding
them through an online FAFSA form, then mentoring them
through the process of receiving and choosing scholarships,
budgeting for a new lifestyle, and avoiding predatory credit
cards! Available at three tax sites, and several offsite
events.
- Cash Advisor: Direct
traffic and be a resources expert for families who don't
know about our amazing onsite services such as Student Aid
and Savings Bonds! Available at three tax
sites.
