Boston's First EcoDistrict Chosen for National Target Cities Program

Jun 24, 2014

IMG_0135-(1).JPGThe Codman Square Development Corporation (CSNDC), Talbot Norfolk Neighbors United (TNTNU), and Mayor Martin J. Walsh announced today that Boston's Talbot Norfolk Triangle Eco-Innovation District has been selected to join the EcoDistricts Target Cities program, a national initiative for promoting district scale sustainability.

Target Cities is a new two-year partnership with nine projects across seven North American cities that aims to amplify and accelerate district-scale community sustainability initiatives and to create replicable models for urban revitalization. Target Cities is made possible through a partnership between the national EcoDistricts organization and the Clinton Global Initiative

The Talbot Norfolk Triangle Eco-Innovation District grew out of a 2009 CSNDC-led planning initiative in Codman Square, Dorchester. During the process, Codman Square residents outlined several environmental, economic, and social equity goals, and specifically identified an Eco Innovation district as key for a healthy community. Since then, TNT members have been working with CSNDC, sustainability practitioners, the City of Boston, and Boston Redevelopment Authority to define principles and projects that will promote sustainability in their neighborhood.

“Our partnership with Target Cities will highlight the TNT Eco-Innovation District as a model of community partnership and best practices for other communities to emulate, while also allowing us to help the City of Boston meet its climate change and sustainability goals. Reducing the impacts of climate change and water consumption by helping residents better insulate their homes or by installing rain barrels are key to creating positive neighborhood scale environmental change. We look forward to continuing to work with EcoDistricts, Talbot Norfolk Neighbors United and our other partners to shine the light on a community-driven path toward increased sustainability and equity," said David Queeley, Eco Innovation Fellow for CSNDC.

The Talbot Norfolk Triangle is the first EcoDistrict to be established in Boston and recently won a citywide Greenove Award. A second EcoDistrict is currently being explored by the City for Boston's South Boston Waterfront neighborhood.

The City of Boston and the Boston Redevelopment Authority are working towards the establishment of EcoDistricts in Boston as a step towards achieving Boston's ambitious green house gas emissions reduction goals. Boston hosted the 2013 EcoDistricts Summit, attracting sustainability and business leaders from around the world to share best practices for district scale sustainability.
