Mayor Walsh Celebrates Groundbreaking on Goodwin Procter Office Building on Fan Pier

Mar 19, 2014

On Wednesday, Mayor Martin J. Walsh joined Massachusetts State Representative Nick Collins, Goodwin Procter Chairman Regina Pisa, The Fallon Company President and CEO Joe Fallon, and a host of local dignitaries to celebrate groundbreaking at 100 Northern Avenue, a 17-story, 515,000 square foot, build-to-suit tower that will house the founding office of Goodwin Procter LLP. This is the fourth commercial tower on Fan Pier, one of the country’s largest privately funded development sites.

"New commercial development is driving job growth in our city. By creating jobs on the waterfront, we can help spread economic opportunity to all of Boston's neighborhoods," said Mayor Walsh.

Designed by internationally recognized architecture and design firm HOK, 100 Northern Avenue will feature 500,000 square feet of commercial space, 380,000 of which will be occupied by Goodwin Procter, which plans to relocate more than 800 attorneys and professional staff to Fan Pier by Spring 2016. The building will also feature more than 15,000 square feet of ground floor retail space.

Fan Pier includes three million square feet of mixed-use office, residential and retail space spanning 21 acres and nine city blocks, on the revitalized Boston Harbor. Goodwin Procter LLP is one of the world’s largest law firms, with offices in Boston, Hong Kong, London, Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, Silicon Valley and Washington, D.C. The hundred year old firm, founded in Boston, provides corporate law and litigation services with a focus on matters involving real estate, REITs and real estate capital markets; private equity; technology and life sciences companies; financial services; intellectual property; products liability and mass torts; and securities litigation and white collar defense.

There is currently $1.2 billion of construction under way on the South Boston Waterfront, totaling 2.2 million square feet and including 684 units of housing. Nearby projects include 100 Pier 4, the Envoy Hotel, and the future Boston offices of PriceWaterHouseCoopers.
