Kickoff Meeting Gathers Ideas to Redesign Mt. Vernon St.

Mar 28, 2014

Last night over 80 stakeholders from the Columbia Point community met with BRA planners and their consultants from Crosby Schlessinger Smallridge and McMahon Associates to discuss future plans for the redesign of Mount Vernon Street on Columbia Point, Dorchester. Attendees included Harbor Point residents; UMass Boston students and administrators; and representatives from the Boys & Girls Club, JFK Museum & Library, the Edward M. Kennedy InstituteCorcoran Jennison Companies, Santander BankGeiger Gibson Health Center, the Doubletree Hotel, Columbia Savin Hill Civic Association, John McCormack Civic Association, and St. Christopher's Church. Councilor Frank Baker was also in attendance as was Sean Pierce representing Senator Linda Dorcena Forry's office.

Following a brief introduction to the project by BRA staff, the consultant team presented some of the opportunities on Mount Vernon Street - including temporary urbanism strategies - and baseline traffic analysis. The attendees then broke into smaller groups to discuss and brainstorm around safety, lighting, cycle tracks, improved sidewalks, and gateway opportunities. Some of the ideas from the younger attendees can be seen below.

The Mt. Vernon Street Redesign effort follows on the heels of the 2011 Columbia Point Master Plan, which identified the street as a critical corridor for connecting the peninsula's evolving residential areas and institutions. Additional community meetings will be planned throughout the spring and summer. Stay tuned to Mount Vernon Redesign news page as well as the BRA calendar for more information about the project.
