Delivering a mobile learning experience to promote children’s literacy

readboston-storymobile-(2).jpgReadBoston, the City’s early literacy initiative, is now accepting applications for host sites for its Storymobile program. For six weeks this summer, beginning July 6, ReadBoston Storymobiles will travel to approximately 80 locations each week across the City, preselected through this application process. Children in attendance will each receive a free book and have the opportunity to hear a captivating story read aloud by a professional storyteller. Applications close Friday, March 13.

As ReadBoston's signature program, the Storymobile is the centerpiece of the City’s efforts to engage children in early reading through an interactive, community-based approach. Each summer the Storymobile program serves children in Boston, playing an active role in promoting children’s literacy when school is not in session.

“Summer is the perfect time for young people to continue investigating their academic interests,” said Mayor Martin J. Walsh. “ReadBoston and the Storymobile invite our youth to learn in an unconventional, but thoughtful way, while they’re on break away from the physical classroom. At the different locations, children can spend time with their families, have a little fun, and learn from their surroundings.”

ReadBoston-Logo.jpgReadBoston’s goal of incorporating literacy into summer programs aims to create a positive association between reading and other activities for children ages 3 to 8 years old. The broader objective of ReadBoston is to help ensure that children in Boston are reading at grade level by the time they complete third grade.

Typical host locations for the Storymobile include neighborhood libraries, daycares, summer camps, and children’s shelters.
