Mayor Menino Reminds Shoppers to Visit Downtown Crossing’s First Ever Holiday Market

Two weeks in, seasonal marketplace proves to be a success

Artists & specialty food vendors have something for everyone

With ten shopping days left, Mayor Thomas M. Menino today reminded shoppers to check out Downtown Crossing’s first ever holiday market. The market, open daily through December 24 is proving to be a popular spot for residents and tourists to do their holiday shopping. Heavy foot traffic through the market is producing record sales for the vendors and the market itself is adding extra holiday spirit to the Crossing. Located in an enclosed tent on Summer Street between the Filene’s & Macy’s buildings, the market has a number of unique items from local artists and specialty food vendors.

“Downtown Crossing has something for everyone this holiday season,” Mayor Menino said. “The entire family will enjoy getting together and sharing some holiday spirit with other Bostonians! Grab some warm apple cider or hot cocoa and other treats from our tasty food vendors, while you browse for that perfect gift.”

The Downtown Crossing Holiday Market, a joint partnership between the Boston Redevelopment Authority and the Boston Public Market, opened on November 28th and runs through December 24th, Monday through Saturday from 11am-7pm and 12 noon – 6pm on Sunday’s. New vendors display their items each week; items include unique and local handcrafted jewelry, pottery, clothing and house wares. Specialty food items include treatment free honey, organic breads, jams, olive oil, popcorn and produce.

“The Holiday Market in Downtown Crossing has been such a great opportunity for us to be in front of a large audience. We originally had only signed up for the first two weeks, but sales were so strong that we are signing up for additional weeks. This is an exciting new holiday tradition for Boston,” said Stephen Elms, Shearwaters.

“The Holiday market has presented our company with an unbelievable opportunity to connect with the public and share our story. I started this company with my younger brother as a weekend experiment to couple our love for sports with our love for art. The Downtown Holiday market has allowed us to maintain a grass roots approach while fueling our entrepreneurial desires. As a result, we have drawn a tremendous amount of attention to our signature sports print The Boston Tea Party and have made many Boston Sports fans very happy this holiday season,” said Mahlon Williams, The Boston Sports Company.

In addition to the happenings inside the tent, there will be live performances everyday on the Macy’s Performance Stage, also located on Summer Street. Performers include local school and theater groups, thriving musicians, dancers and singers. More than 55 artists are signed up to participate, and they will hit the stage Monday through Sunday from 12pm to 2pm and again Sunday afternoon from 5pm – 7pm.
